The New FX mini-series "Shogun" totally delivers in many ways and is a dramatic departure from the 1980 NBC mini-series of the same name, both adaptations of James Clavell's best-selling novel depicting feudal Japan's final days. However, the new show's success hinges on the same criteria as its predecessor:
Adapted from James Clavell’s bestselling novel and previously turned into a 1980 NBC miniseries, Shogun is set in 17th-century Japan, poised on the brink of civil war. A year after the taiko, the supreme leader of a unified Japan, passed away, his underage heir is unable to ascend the throne. In his place, a five-person Council of Regents has been established. Among them, Lord Yoshii Toranaga (played by Hiroyuki Sanada), a distinguished warrior from a prestigious family, stands out as the most mysterious. While two council members have converted to Catholicism due to Portuguese trade, the others suspect Toranaga of plotting to become shogun, effectively ruling Japan as a military dictator.
