The $1,000 Fine Heard Around The World: Angel Reese Fined By WNBA

Even small fines in the WNBA have turned into front-page news, or maybe it's just a super slow news day. Either way, the WNBA fined Angel Reese $1,000 for skipping out on her media obligations after the Chicago Sky lost to the Indian Fever 71 to 70.

Let's face it: superhero movies do not work without a villain. In the world of Angel Reese vs Caitlin Clark, Reese is clearly cast as the antagonist, a role she appears to embrace.

Even small fines in the WNBA have turned into front-page news, or maybe it's just a super slow news day. Either way, the WNBA fined Angel Reese $1,000 for skipping out on her media obligations after the Chicago Sky lost to the Indian Fever 71 to 70.

The league also fined the Sky $5,000 for “failing to ensure that all players comply with WNBA media policies.”

Reese, whose WNBA salary is just $73,439, won't in any way be affected by this fine as she makes considerably more of the court than on the court. Take, for example, her 17 deals in 2022 and 2023 were worth around $1.7 million, according to USA Today. Some of those endorsement deals include:

  • Sports Illustrated

  • Calvin Klein

  • Outback Steakhouse

  • Reebok

  • ZOA Energy

  • Amazon

  • Starry

  • Playstation

  • Mielle Organics

  • JanSport

THE UNDERRATED OPINION
As much as this may pain Reese, the reason her $1k fine is such a big deal is clearly because of the Caitlin Clark effect. Right or wrong, the truth is the fine is being covered by press agencies around the globe because of the attention that Clark is bringing to the WNBA.

The Reese vs. Clark saga is ultimately good for the WNBA, and like any good director, the WNBA is simply stoking the flames for round two.
