Dan Hurley Confirms Lakers Head Coach Talks

Hurley is reportedly on his way to Los Angeles to meet with Lakers GM Rob Pelinka and Lakers owner Jeanie Buss on Friday morning.

Jun 6, 2024

This morning, we all woke up to a Woj Bomb about UCONN head coach Dan Hurley possibly becoming the Los Angeles Lakers' next head coach, who had completely come out of the left field. Prior to this morning, word on the streets had JJ Redick as the front-runner for the job.

Here's what ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported earlier in the day about the Lakers "targeting" Hurley and is prepared to make him a "massive, long-term contract offer" in the coming days amid previous buzz that JJ Redick was emerging as the team's top choice.

Since then, thousands of hours of commentary have been provided across the sports media landscape, and the feedback has been mostly favorable. Hurley is reportedly on his way to Los Angeles to meet with Lakers GM Rob Pelinka and Lakers owner Jeanie Buss on Friday morning.

Per Fox Sports' John Fanta, Hurley informed Huskies players on Thursday that he's had talks with the Lakers because he didn't want to hide what's going on.

THE UNDERRATED OPINION
Hurley has proven to be a great college coach and fantastic at building the kind of culture that promotes success. That being said, throughout his college coaching career, he has not won immediately; in fact, at UCONN, it took him three years to make the NCAA tournament.

The other knock against Hurley is that his traditional head coaching tactic may not translate to the NBA. He is widely considered to be a control freak who runs tough practices and has no issues getting into it with his players. While he is beloved by his college players, the real question is how he will adjust to the NBA.

Coaching in the NBA is a whole different thing than college, and while Hurley has the personality to succeed the NBA level, the question is how he will handle players who stop listening to him.
