NFL Chain Gangs Are About To Become Extinct: NFL to Test Optical Tracking Systems For Line-To-Gain Rulings in Preseason

The world of technology is finally catching up with the NFL's chain gang, which may result in its extinction. The NFL, which is reportedly valued at over $100 billion, is finally catching up with the times; ironically, NFL footballs already come fully loaded with microchips, which begs the question: Why has it taken the NFL so long to make the move?

According to CBS Sports, the NFL intends to implement an optical tracking system for line-to-gain rulings and will test it during the 2024 preseason. The decision was quietly made by the NFL's competition committee in March.

If successful and approved by NFL owners, the league could implement the new tracking technique for the upcoming 2024 season. Implementing the new optical tracking system would essentially relegate the chain gang to a secondary role. They will still be present but will no longer be the primary method for determining the football's accurate spot.

The new system's introduction during the 2024 regular season depends on its successful trial run this preseason. If it isn't deemed ready, the league may delay its launch until 2025, allowing the chain gang to maintain its responsibilities for another season.

This new system aims to reduce human error in line-to-gain rulings, representing a significant shift as the league seeks to incorporate new technology to enhance the game.

The NFL chain gangs have been endangered species for well over ten years, and the upcoming preseason appears to be their last stand. Hopefully, the tech will speed up the game and work well enough to cut down on clearly bad spots, which can affect the outcome of tight football games.

As entertaining as measurements have been over the years, it is nice to see the NFL finally moving forward!
